Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for

Insomnia (CBT-I)

Finding greater ease in your relationship with sleep

When sleep becomes difficult, it can affect how you feel, think, and move through your day. You may find yourself lying awake with a busy mind, waking throughout the night, or feeling anxious as bedtime approaches. Over time, trying to get enough rest can become exhausting in itself.

At Nimble Counselling, we offer sleep counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) to help you understand your sleep difficulties and work towards more restful, consistent sleep. Together, we explore the patterns keeping you awake and develop practical strategies that honour your individual needs and circumstances.

What Is CBT-I?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia, commonly called CBT-I, is a structured, evidence-based approach to treating insomnia. It explores how thoughts, behaviours, and daily routines interact with the body’s natural sleep systems.

Sleep difficulties may begin during a period of stress, illness, or change. Sometimes, even after that initial disruption has passed, the difficulties continue. Worrying about sleep, spending longer awake in bed, or changing your routine to compensate for difficult nights can unintentionally keep the cycle going.

CBT-I helps you understand and gradually shift these patterns. Through this process, you can build greater confidence in your ability to sleep and reduce the pressure surrounding bedtime.

What is Somatic Experiencing

Could Sleep Counselling Help Me?

While Somatic Experiencing can still be conversational, unlike traditional talk therapy, which focuses primarily on cognitive processing, Somatic Experiencing focuses directly with the body’s innate healing mechanisms. Instead of forcing the body to relive distressing memories, it supports a natural and gradual release of held tension, creating space for healing and resilience.

During a session, your therapist will guide you through:

  • Tracking – Bringing awareness to physical sensations such as warmth, tingling, or areas of tension.

  • Titration – Processing trauma in small, digestible amounts to prevent overwhelm.

  • Pendulation – Moving between activation and regulation, expanding your capacity to experience emotions safely.

By tuning into these sensations, Somatic Experiencing helps the nervous system complete unfinished survival responses in a controlled, supportive environment. Over time, this process leads to greater emotional regulation, reduced stress, and a stronger sense of internal safety.

How Does CBT-I Work?

CBT-I brings together several approaches, tailored to your sleep patterns, health, and circumstances. Your work with your counsellor may include:

Understanding your sleep
Learning about your internal body clock, how sleep pressure builds, and the natural variations in sleep from night to night.

Rebuilding the connection between bed and sleep
Exploring patterns that may have linked bedtime with worry, frustration, or wakefulness, and developing a stronger association with rest.

Adjusting sleep patterns
Carefully adjusting the time you spend in bed, with your counsellor’s guidance, to support more consolidated and consistent sleep.

Working with thoughts about sleep
Recognizing expectations, fears, and beliefs that increase pressure around sleep, and practising more flexible ways of responding.

Supporting rest and regulation
Exploring ways to respond to racing thoughts and physical tension, alongside habits that support your sleep.

Preparing for future disruptions
Building confidence and practical tools to navigate difficult nights when stress or circumstances change.

What Can Somatic Experiencing help with

What Can I Expect During CBT-I Counselling?

We begin with a conversation about your sleep history, current concerns, daily routines, health, and what you hope will change. You may be invited to keep a sleep diary to help us understand your patterns and develop an individualized treatment plan.

CBT-I typically involves 4–10 weekly sessions, with treatment tailored to your sleep concerns, circumstances, and goals.

Between appointments, you will practise strategies discussed with your counsellor. Sessions provide space to reflect on what you notice, review your progress, discuss challenges, and adjust your plan together.

Throughout this process, we work towards more consistent, restorative sleep and greater confidence in responding to difficult nights. Our aim is to help you develop understanding and practical skills you can continue using long after counselling ends.

A Whole-Person Approach to Sleep

Sleep is connected to the rest of your life. Your physical health, emotional wellbeing, relationships, environment, and responsibilities can all influence your ability to rest.

At Nimble, we take time to understand this wider picture. We consider how factors such as anxiety, pain, grief, work schedules, or caregiving may be affecting your sleep. Together, we develop an approach that fits your life and allows room for adjustment along the way.

Some sleep concerns also need medical assessment. If you experience loud snoring, gasping during sleep, or significant daytime sleepiness, your counsellor may encourage you to speak with a healthcare provider. Sleep counselling can work alongside medical care.
