It takes all kinds of brains to build a strong community.

Why I Do This Work

I believe in building empathy for those working with neurodiverse individuals, and for neurodiverse people learning to build empathy for themselves.

The world is changing quickly, and so is the way we understand intelligence, learning, and success. Neurodiverse thinkers are not something to be accommodated; they are essential. The creativity, pattern recognition, and problem-solving that come from differently wired minds are vital to innovation, community, and the success of any team.

Inclusion isn’t about tolerance; it’s about celebration. It takes all kinds of minds to build the kind of workplaces, schools, and societies we need for the future. My work is about helping people recognize that difference is not a deficit to manage, but a strength to cultivate.

My Story

I speak from both sides of the system, as a former special education student and as a special education teacher.

I was a late speaker and when I did I had a heavy speech impediment. I was diagnosed with dyslexia, and a host of other diagnoses which effect my fine motor skills, focus and executive functioning, I was mostly illiterate until high school. Like many neurodiverse students, I spent years feeling like I was the problem. Over time, I began to see that my success wasn’t in spite of my neurodiversity, it was because of it.

That shift changed everything. It led me to an Honours Degree in Mathematics, to working with at-risk youth and outdoor education programs, and eventually to teaching in inclusive classrooms. At Collingwood School, I helped design and implement programs that supported teachers in adopting strength-based practices and inclusive approaches that work in real classrooms.

Beyond education, I have also been a high-level athlete, a community business owner, and a nonprofit board member. These experiences have given me a broader understanding of how inclusion, teamwork, and empathy shape communities inside and outside the classroom.

I went on to complete my Master of Education in Educational Leadership at Simon Fraser University, where my research explored how teachers’ understanding of learning disabilities shapes empathy and inclusive practice. What I found was clear: empathy grows from understanding, and understanding grows when we listen to people’s lived experiences.

Today, I use both my professional background and my personal story to help others reimagine what inclusion looks like in classrooms, workplaces, and communities.

Testimonials

The following feedback reflects the impact of the workshops and talks I’ve delivered across a range of settings.
I’ve had the privilege of working with organizations such as school districts across British Columbia, Novak Education, the BC Association of Mathematics Teachers (BCAMT), Four Seasons Resort Whistler, the Resort Municipality of Whistler, local sporting organizations, Dyslexia and Beyond, and several independent schools throughout Vancouver.

Each collaboration has reinforced a shared truth: when we take the time to understand and value different ways of thinking, communities, classrooms, and teams all grow stronger.

Nick Allen,

Pro D Chair Don Ross Middle School

Blake's presentation on neurodiverse students was informative, engaging, and knowledgeable. He is very good in connecting with his audience by sharing his personal experiences which made it relatable and inspiring. Blake's expertise with the subject matter was quite evident and the activities allowed us to engage and better understand neurodiverse students through role play and scenarios. It was a pleasure to have Blake join us and would strongly recommend him to work with other educators.

Monica Doyle,

Principal, J.V. Humphries Elementary-Secondary

"Blake's presentation to our primary, intermediate and high school teachers was a real mind shift. He got us to think differently about dyslexia and to question many of our presuppositions. He's a compelling presenter, who draws on inspiring first-hand experiences, scientific evidence and knows how to engage an audience. Blake exceeded our expectations and, as a result, we would love to have him back for a follow-up session."

Dr. Darien Allen,

Head of Mathematics Collingwood School

Blake is a creative and collaborative educator who always meets students and colleagues where they are at, tailoring his coaching to their needs. He takes the lead on coaching conversations with colleagues to examine their own practices, while coming from a place of curiousity. Blake has great ideas to engage students in multi-modal tasks, taking one such idea from inception to pilots with students, revision, reflection and crafting what was ultimately a jam-packed and well-received workshop session at a recent Northwest Mathematics Conference hosted by the BCAMT.

Workshop Participant

Didn’t get to connect with you at the end of your presentation but I wanted to say that I thought it was super good! I felt it was really effective at giving us a window into what it might be like for a neurodiverse person as they attempt to make sense of things within the context of a classroom. Also, the analogies you used to describe the differences in processing profiles between neurotypical and neurodiverse people really helped to build understanding and empathy.
